The Chairman of Nigeria National Committee (NNC) of WAEC, who is the Federal Government’s Nominee, Hajia Binta Abdulkadir, gave the hint on Thursday at the opening session of this year’s Annual Meeting of NNC (63rd edition) in Umuahia, Abia State.
The Nigeria National Committee (NNC) serves as WAEC’s highest decision-making body in the country, comprising key education stakeholders nationwide. The committee convenes once a year, with meetings rotating across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Abdulkadir, who also serves as Director of Basic Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, noted that the committee is aware of concerns raised by stakeholders regarding the Federal Government’s earlier directive for examination bodies to fully transition to computer-based testing (CBT) by 2026.
She reassured candidates, stating, “No student sitting for the 2026 WASSCE will be disadvantaged in any way.”
Hajia Abdulkadir further highlighted WAEC’s ongoing efforts to ensure a smooth transition to full CBT. These include pilot programs where senior secondary school students are trained to use tablets and adopt digital methods for answering essay questions, among other initiatives.
Specifically, she said “Science students are not barred from taking Economics as an elective to complete their subject selection even as the period for Continuous Assessment Scores (CASS) uploading has been extended for accurate capturing of CASS for candidates, who must take new subjects in line with the Federal Government’s approved list for the WASSCE for School Candidates, 2026.”

Meanwhile, WAEC recognized and celebrated the top three performers in the 2024 school-based May/June examination, alongside two outstanding special candidates who are visually impaired, as well as winners from other categories during the event.
Master Ajisafe Qoreebullah Olamilekan, a student of Eemaan Foundation College, Osogbo, Osun State, emerged as the best overall candidate nationwide and was presented with WAEC’s prestigious National Distinction Award.
Similarly, Joan and Chibukem, like Qoreebullah who emerged as the overall best candidate, are currently pursuing degrees in Medicine and Surgery. Joan studies at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, while Chibukem is enrolled at Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti (ABUAD).
In the same vein, WAEC also recognized and rewarded the top male and female candidates among special students in the examination. They are Master Ugwu Christian Chiemerie, aged 23, and Miss Abiodun Taye Olubunmi.
Christian, a graduate of the College of Immaculate Conception, Uwani, Enugu State, recorded a total score of 413.5326, while Taye, a student of Queen’s College, Lagos, achieved a higher score of 429.1543. Currently, Christian is studying Law at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, while Taye is pursuing Guidance and Counselling at the University of Ilorin.
Speaking at the event, the Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, commended WAEC for its significant contributions to the development of education in Nigeria and its commitment to conducting credible examinations.
Represented by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Elder Goodluck Chinedu Ubochi, the governor assured that Abia State would continue to support the examination body in every possible way.
He also praised WAEC’s proactive measures to strengthen the credibility of its examinations, particularly through policies aimed at curbing malpractice and safeguarding the integrity of assessment processes nationwide. According to him, these efforts are “timely, courageous, and essential to securing the future of young Nigerians.”
Earlier in his remarks, the Head of National Office, WAEC Nigeria, Dr. Amos Dangut, explained that the various award categories were introduced to promote excellence and healthy competition among students and schools across the country.
He added that the initiative has yielded impressive results, while congratulating the award recipients, their schools, and their parents. He encouraged them to remain focused and continue striving for greater academic achievements.
Hajia Abdulkadir also praised the awardees, urging them to sustain their dedication in both their studies and other pursuits. She further reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting WAEC in its mandate and ensuring that Nigerian students remain competitive on the global stage.
