Miva Open University: History, Programmes and Academic Expansion

Miva Open University was established on 10 March 2023 by the uLesson Group, a Nigerian edtech company with operations in several West African countries. On 15 May 2023, the university obtained its operating licence from the National Universities Commission (NUC), officially becoming a recognised university focused on providing flexible distance-learning opportunities in Nigeria.

The university commenced its admission process on 25 May 2023, initially offering eight programmes across two faculties.

Miva Open University offers a wide range of undergraduate programmes across areas including Computer Science, Cyber Security, Data Science, Software Engineering, Public Health, Nursing Science, Accounting, Economics, Entrepreneurship, Information Technology, Criminology and Security Studies, Mass Communication, Business Management, and Public Policy and Administration.

The university expanded its postgraduate offerings with the introduction of the Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme on 2 April 2024, followed by the Master of Public Administration (MPA) programme on 7 October 2024.

On 7 February 2025, the NUC approved two additional postgraduate programmes—Master of Public Health (MPH) and Master of Information Technology (MIT)—for Miva Open University, beginning from the 2024/2025 academic session.

In April 2026, Miva Open University received full NUC accreditation for 12 of its programmes, further strengthening its position within Nigeria’s higher education sector. The university also continued to expand its academic offerings by introducing several new undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

Am I required to take JAMB/UTME?

Please note that submission of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) results is not mandatory at this stage. However, upon admission to the university, the WAEC, NECO, GCE, or NABTEB results you provided will be verified for authenticity, and JAMB Regularisation obtained.

Miva Open University offers online lectures. Optional meets and greets and other engagement events may be organized for students to interact with faculty members and classmates. In-person attendance is not compulsory.
