Experts Encourage Students to Build Saving and Budgeting Culture – Regina Dimlong, Assistant Director in the Communication and Public Affairs Department of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation, Abuja, delivered the message in Maiduguri during a sensitisation programme for secondary school students in Borno State. The event was organised as part of activities marking the Corporation’s 2026 Financial Literacy Day.

Secondary school students have been urged to imbibe habits of savings and budgeting. Speaking, Dimlong harped on need for secondary school students to understand importance of budgeting and savings before they gain admission into higher institutions of learning.

She said, “The objective of the Financial Literacy Day is to inculcate into secondary school students the culture of savings and budgeting, and the need for them to identify the difference between needs and wants.”

“They don’t need to wait until they get to university or graduate before they begin saving. Whatever money they receive, they should make it a habit to save it in the bank.”

The Principal of Government College Maiduguri, Abba Ali, praised the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation, noting that the knowledge shared would have a lasting impact on the students’ everyday lives.

“I commend the NDIC for this initiative. Through the Smart Money Talk, our students have learned important lessons on saving and investment. I am confident they have gained valuable knowledge, which they will apply and also share with their peers,” he said.

One of the participating students, Yahaya Zainab, said the programme had reform her perspective on financial management.

“I appreciate how we were thoroughly lectured on  how to manage our money and utilize it properly. I will apply this gained experience in my financial journey,” she added.
